We're not exactly sure what an Indie Christmas should be like, but let's give it a shot. At least we know it is the least mainstream, commercial music we can find about Christmas.
There have a number of indie-themed Christmas albums and compliations released over the years by indie rock and pop artists, most notably perhaps is Sufjan Stevens' simply titled but mangificient four EP box set "Christmas Songs".
At some point, everyone's had enough of the traditional Christmas songs, so we've put together a little pretty package of indie music Christmas songs. Let's start off with a music video of The Flaming Lips performing "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas."
Watch a Sufjan Stevens' video performing from the album. There is a free music stream of the entire 4 EPs, plus information on what the box set contains. Listen or download MP3s from the boxset from a profile we did of Sufjan back in November
AOL offers some easy to view (nothing to download) videos of indie artists performing Christmas songs: Flaming Lips,"Christmas at the Zoo" Fiona Apple, "Frosty the Snowman", Travis, "River", Death Cab for Cutie, "DFA Holiday Mix".
Other indie Christmas choices include Do You Hear What I Hear?. The album contains a number of great covers of traditional Christmas songs, like "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" by Hem, "Holly Jolly Christmas" by The Format, plus and non-traditional songs like "Welcome Christmas" by The Clumsy Lovers. You can sample all of these tracks at on emusic.com.
